I have had the same web host for a couple of years now. When I first signed up with them, the sites I created were fast and their 99.9% uptime guarantee seemed to mean something. I had no problems with them until my sites became unavailable.
Welcome to the new home of “An Irene Thing.” Posts have been imported from our original installation and we’re all set for business.
In case you’re curious, the header image is a photo of the Oculus, the PATH station/shopping mall at the World Trade Center. I took this picture right before Christmas. Here is another interesting view from inside the Oculus:
After years as a sub-domain of irenesmith.com, “It’s an Irene Thing” is moving to its own domain, http://www.anirenething.com
Hope you will visit us at our new location.
This blog originally lived at blog.irenesmith.com but I have (finally!) gotten a domain just for An Irene Thing. Hope you enjoy your visit here. If you had bookmarked blog.irenesmith.com, please update your bookmark now because in the near future, the old blog will go away.
I have not been doing much writing for the past couple of years. I used to write after work, early in the morning, on the weekends, but that time has been completely consumed by school. When I wasn’t working, I was studying, writing papers and applications, and participating online in the classes I took to complete my Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology.
As of February 10, 2015 I have completed my BS/IT with a concentration in Software Engineering with a GPA of 3.92.
When I started school, my goal was to have a degree to go with the knowledge I already had. Goal attained! Perhaps I could even say, “Goal exceeded!” I learned a lot about the non-programming parts of programming, such as gathering requirements, designing the application, and how the various parts of a software system work together.
Now I don’t know what to do with myself.
I gave myself a week to do nothing. I played video games, read books, watch movies, and generally pampered myself. For the first time in a decade I’ve been getting eight hours of sleep at night. I’ve been eating actual meals instead of grabbing fast food and junk. I am actually beginning to feel like a human being again.
Now it is time to set goals, to find a new direction, and to put my education to good use. As they used to say back in the 70s, “Today is the first day of the rest of my life.”
Sometimes I feel as though I am wasting my time. Before I lost everything, I had close to 100 blog posts. And 99% of the comments I received were spam. While I like spam for breakfast, those comments were not the kind of give and take conversation I had hoped for. Sometimes I consider the idea of giving it all up.
